An individual made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was made public, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of American actions.

Market Movement in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the leader would be out of power by the close of the month surged in the time leading up to President Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.

One account, which registered on the site last month and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, earned over $nearly half a million from a initial bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Market Signals Before Announcement

Platform data shows that traders assessed the probability of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

Yet these probabilities had climbed to 11% by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the early hours of January 3rd, indicating a sudden change in betting activity immediately prior to the social media post was made.

"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a bet based on non-public details," stated Dennis Kelleher.

A small number of other traders also profited significant sums from similar wagers.

Regulatory Scrutiny Grows

Politicians are beginning to pay attention.

A new rule presented on Monday aims to prohibit federal workers from making trades on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.

Market Background

Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in the United States, with participants able to bet on everything from elections to politics.

This sector were examined under the Biden administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.

Trading on insider information is a crime in the stock market, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting industry.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against trading on insider information of any form."
