The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
