A recent study indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing these drugs must be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to starting weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated weight return.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
People who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It was like something flipping and you become ravenous," described one woman.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is higher among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
