The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and characteristic instances – not its most crucial, nor cruelest, nor most dangerous, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of multiple weeks, the US president commenced revealing everyone his intentions for an ornate dance hall double the dimensions compared to the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to erect it.
He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the present calculation of deaths resulting from his reductions to USAID is 600,000 and growing, and presently a study projected his fossil fuel policies would kill another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have attempted – really, no former commander would have conceived – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the executive mansion in order to erect a Versailles-style party room, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple America's wealthiest, almost all of whom conduct transactions with the government.

As bewildering as it is to observe the president seek to颠覆 the traditional concept about democracy and substitute it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment of Americans who should not find it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – among senior generations close to half – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.
We have observed across decades while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we were raised with into the total contrary of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they converted a persona of love into an icon of animosity who endorses specifically the brutality that he denounced in scripture; this change developed more gradually, through multiple decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disturbing in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.
A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground
Therefore allow me to outline the Jesus from my upbringing, since in theory Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and because the quickly increasing segment within America could have minimal awareness regarding him because they identify as non-believers or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that contain precious wisdom of significant worth in the Christian story.
It is decidedly definitely not the story of a powerful ruler appearing; rather, a child comes into the world to parents without shelter in an automotive shelter, who must quickly flee to a different country to avoid undercover officers. The apparent and clear reality that the Jesus from scripture calls for a type of radical love concentrated on the poor is what has always made Christian religion something of a scandalous religion: engaging for the populace, but owing to its intrinsic extremism requiring to be restrained. In the 1950s it was contained via weakening – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Battle for the Highest of Us
Therefore I have felt inspired to see the persistent defiance regarding Trump arise during the previous year. It has been great solace to participate in developing the movement that has demonstrated publicly via continuous gatherings, and appears to have motivated voters to participate in significant amounts during minor elections. We must have to persist with it, and with identical determination, with American flags during all protests and appeals to the highest qualities of American history.

America is best defended, to put it differently, by reference to the best within national tradition, exactly as the Christian faith is best defended by relationship to that which renders it special and beautiful, particularly the pattern of Christ. In neither case does it suggest feigning the worst of both America and Christian faith did not happen; it signifies both humility and faith, a combination that serious American Christians should embrace.
